How Lost Got Lost Kickoff Blog Part One
This, the first entry in the How Lost Got Lost Blog, is to introduce myself and the book to all by telling the story of how my wife and I and a friend went down to Comic-Con without tickets.
My book, How Lost Got Lost was published the same week as Comic-Con 2010, which I felt was the perfect place to kick off the promotion of the book. Also, I had mentioned Tim Surette, a tv.com staff writer in the book – as the guy who wrote most of the wonderful Lost articles – and tv.com in general as my main resource for episode recap info to aid my memory, along with cast and character info.
My publisher felt that getting a courtesy copy to Mr. Surette might be helpful in promoting my book. I tried everything Internet to find a place to send him a copy, but came up empty. In reading articles on tv.com, I realized that the entire writing staff of tv.com would be at Comic-Con, to cover it in depth for tv.com, and decided to try to get a courtesy copy to him somehow. My publisher, who is in Canada, sent a cover letter to include with the Advanced Reading Copy, and left the rest to us.
Now I had two reasons to drive the 400 miles to San Diego to visit Comic-Con, even though I would probably be unable to get in.
My plan was to distribute colorful bookmarks to people, with the cover of my new book and info on where to buy one – along with my new website address, www.howlostgotlost.com . I made about 3000, and my wife and a dear friend of ours accompanied me on this bold quest for some advance publicity.
We left at 3 AM on Friday July 23rd, 2010, and arrived at 9 AM at the Convention center – after dropping off the courtesy copy of the book to First Legal, a local messenger company, for delivery to Tim Surette of tv.com, later in the day.
I had read a Comic-Con Survival Guide on tv.com the day before, and we feared the worst. I was actually thinking from what they had said that I might not be able to get within ten blocks of the action without a badge, but such was not the case.
I was dropped very near the Convention Center to scout the terrain, and I joined the huge crowd waiting to cross “L” Street into paradise. There were event staff everywhere, and vendors passing out a lot of free stuff. I passed by the Green Hornet Girls hanging around the Black Beauty – aka the Green Hornet Mobile – and knew I was in for some real fun this day.
To be continued...
